The Beautiful Georgian Bay Town

The beautiful town of Meaford is nestled into the southern shore area of Georgian Bay and lies between Owen Sound and the new town of Blue Mountains. Although some areas have changed, Meaford still maintains homes from a bygone era due in part to the artisan community of the town. One of the most coveted experiences in the area, and one that attracts visitors from all over Canada, is to travel the Apple Pie Trail. Thirty stops along the apple pie trail allow the area to share beautiful apple blossoms in the spring to the sight of growing apples in the summer and the smell of apples baking in the fall and winter.

Meaford and the surrounding area is one of the coveted "Four Season" areas where there is always something to do. During the summer months there's swimming and boating or lazing in the sun, but it's also an active town with concerts and great theatre. You can buy fresh fruit from local markets that you'll eat as you walk down to the beautiful harbor side area of Georgian Bay. Spring and fall bring visitors from all over Ontario to walk and appreciate the many nature trails. Wintertime is active as snowmobilers and skiers flock to the area to enjoy their favourite sports. Meaford has always been known for being a premier destination for cottage and camping in natural surroundings, and as part of the Grey Bruce Trail it shares in the $24.5 million generated by tourists to the area.

Meaford Hospital provides medical services to the town and surrounding area. Here, patients have access to specialists and the town has a number of general practitioner doctors available as well as clinics that offer health services. For schools, the town has two elementary schools and a secondary high school. For post-secondary education students attend Georgian College located in the Collingwood area.

Meaford offers a wide range of housing choices, from heritage homes to newer developments. Home prices in this area are stable, in part due to CFB Meaford being in the northwest area of town. The town offers a number of businesses that include organic and regular farming, green businesses, and retail stores with tourism providing the largest number of jobs in the area.

An interesting organization in Meaford is the Business Improvement Area. This organization has been active for twenty years and is run by volunteers who work throughout the year to promote businesses in the area and work on a number of beautification projects throughout the year. The area has a true sense of community involvement as seen by the impressive number of different organizations around town.

A recent report by Statistics Canada rated Meaford as the second safest community in all of Canada. The current Mayor of Meaford, Francis Richardson, stated that he had always considered it to be a safe community. For this and a host of other reasons, Meaford is a community that many aspire to live in. In recent years there has been an influx of "active" baby boomers moving to the area, as it provides a wide range of lifestyle options as well as good health care facilities.
